Finding Your Writing Niche

by Amanda on November 10, 2008

As a ghostwriter it can sometimes be important to find your own niche or specialist subject.  However, when most people including myself start ghostwriting we can find ourselves doing every type of writing there is.  I have as most of you probably have spent hours writing up tedious keyword articles.  We’ve all been there, writing 25 different articles on the subject of vacuum cleaners or garden ornaments.  They are tiresome, boring, but yes they pay, well they used to anyway.  When I started ghostwriting you could bid $10 for a 300 word keyword article and that was standard.  Oh how times have changed, I have seen jobs advertised at $1 for 300 word articles, and these jobs actually get taken.

Okay so I am getting a little off topic now.  What I wanted to talk about today was actually finding your niche when it comes to ghostwriting.  There are so many different areas that you can approach and I guess to only way to find out which one is best for you is to try them all.  I have written press releases, I enjoy these and the pay rate is quite good.  You can get $100 or more for a one page press release so they really do beat the dreaded keyword articles.  Web content is another thing that I have enjoyed on occassion, not to mention writing e-books.  The one thing I didn’t like about writing e-books though, was the fact that they are not very high paying and the people you write them for can often go on to make thousands of dollars selling them online.

Academic writing, technical writing, scriptwriting, short stories, poetry, you name it there is a freelance need all you really have to do is find out what suits you best.

I recently had a request to edit a script.  This was something I had never done before so I gave my quote, got the job, and guess what, I have found my niche.  I absolutely loved working with this script, editing grammatical errors, and giving my advice and input into where things could be changed.

The script is now being presented to Hollywood and fingers crossed my client will sell it.

Editing is not something that I would have thought about but it seems to be something that I really enjoy doing.

My advice to all ghostwriters, try everything, even just once, you’ll be surprised at what suits you best.

Until next time,

Amanda
