Too Busy To Blog

by Amanda on February 24, 2009

When you first decide to become a freelance writer or ghostwriter, you read, you obtain knowledge and you put it all to work for you. One of the things that you are advised to do is have a web presence. Web presence is essential for getting your name out there, for attracting new clients, for building your reputation, and much more. But the question I want to ask you today is, what happens when you get too busy to blog?

Web presence for most freelancers consists of a website and blog. They work hard at building up their blog, building up their traffic and readership and that’s great. I’ve done it myself but the thing I struggle most with is keeping this up. You get weeks where you are extremely busy and paying clients come first. Paying clients get priority and your blog gets neglected.

You will probably notice that this has happened to me in the past couple of weeks, my blogging has been slack, and that is because I have been extremely busy with new clients and coaching work.

I am not embarrassed to admit that yes I have my faults too and my blog becomes less important when my paying work takes over. It’s wrong of me, I created this blog to help my fellow writers and I always feel guilty when I neglect my blog. I do accept guest posts on my blog and these can be very valuable when my client work is substantial, but I have also devised a system that I am hoping will help too.

I have decided that I should try to treat my blog like a paying assignment. If I was creating blog posts for a client I would have no problem researching and writing a blog post each day if that was the job. So what if I used the same approach for this blog? What if I decided on a schedule say 3 posts per week? Would I be able to feel the same way about my blog? It’s a test for me at the moment and something I am not sure is going to work.

I have so many post ideas and research sitting on my laptop but I find that at the end of the day after working hard on client assignments I just don’t have the energy to work on my blog.

The blog we create as freelancers is our gateway to the world, it’s our way of getting our message out, and if we neglect that it’s like neglecting an element of our business wouldn’t you agree?

I am ready to put myself to the challenge. I am ready to post three times per week, and I want everyone to help me out. I would like you to post your questions in the comments section. Tell me what you would like to see a post on and tell me how I can help you.

If you want to know where I find my clients? If you want to know how to write a press release? If you want to know what I think of a certain writing project? Whatever it is just ask, I promise I will answer each and every question I receive in a full and honest post.

Until next time,

Keep writing.
