Choosing a freelance writing job to bid on with Elance isn’t as simple as just logging on and placing a bid and there are a number of things that you should take into consideration before you do this. There are some tricks and tips that can help you make the most of your bids (connects as they are called on Elance) and not waste them.

Connects are explained in the previous post http://ghostwritinguncovered.com/Blog/elance-fees-and-connects-explained/

When you log into your Elance account and go to the Writing and Translation category to find jobs there are a few things that you should do. I always choose the show all category so that I can see a list of all the jobs that are available. Here’s a screen shot of what you should see:

Next I will start at the top of the list. If we take a look at the first project listed which is for a Creative Writer That Loves Food, we can see that there are no bids at this time. We can also see that the buyer has selected not sure for their budget (this can be a sign that the buyer is just putting up the project to get an idea of what it might cost them). If you mouse over the buyers name Ferntec you will see that they have posted 18 jobs and awarded 50% of them so that is a good sign. Next thing that I would do is to click on the + beside details to take a close look at this project. This acutually shows very little so I would click into the actual project itself to see what the buyer is looking for.

The job description is very poor:

Job Description:

Need a very creative writer that loves food, cooking, recipes etc..

Want ot to be very personal and fun…will only give slight suggestions – hopefully you can direct the newsletter yourself – self reliant, dependable

I have a few ideas for the newsletter – must promote products etc..

Please attach some writing that you have done – can be your choice

There is no indication as to how many words this buyer requires or exactly what they want. For me unless I was interested in writing newsletter I would leave off bidding on this project. The reason being I don’t want to waste my connects having to ask questions about exactly what the buyer wants.

Moving on, the next job listed is a featured project. You will see that this freelance writing jobs has been highlighted. This means that you will use double your connects to bid on it. It’s a translation job so I would skip this anyway. The next job I would look at is for 20 Articles. There are no bids on it as yet so let’s take a look. The first thing we can see is that the budget is less than $500. This is also the first project this person has posted and when we look at the details we see that this buyer has a very detailed description which is good, and it is also very clear, you are given the required layout for the articles and told that they are to be 500 words each. If I were to bid on this project I would bid a minimum of $10 per article so $200 for the articles and then include the Elance fees which are Payment Processing costs (2.75%) and Elance Service fee (from 4% to 6%). You will see these fees when you put in the amount of your bid as below:

There are a number of things to look out for when placing bids: If a buyer states “this project is easy for someone who knows what they are doing” this literally means I expect this to be completed for next to nothing so I would avoid bidding on this. Be sure to always check how many projects the buyer has posted and how many they have awarded. Elance insist that buyers award 20% of their projects which is one in 5. I mention this because if you bid on a project and it’s not awarded you don’t get your connect back.

Check out the buyers feedback too and always insist on using Escrow for payment. Don’t forget to include your Elance fees in your bids too as these are important. If you have any questions or comments on bidding on freelance writing jobs using Elance please leave them below in the comments section and I will answer them as quickly as possible.

Until next time,

Keep writing

In part 1 of this series we looked at keywords and their importance to your clients. In part 2 we are going to look at content itself and the importance of having unique content.

The Qualities Of A Good SEO Article

There are 6 key qualities that you should keep in mind when writing SEO articles for your clients. The first of these:

1. Avoid Duplicate Content

This is probably the most important rule that you have to remember although as a writer this probably won’t apply to you if you are professional and serious about your career. There are however, some people out there who market themselves as writers who do actually just copy and paste content for their articles so I have to include this. What you need to realise, is that when search engines comes across duplicate content on the internet they need to decide which website contains the original content. Once this has been determined the other websites will not be given any credit, so for a client, this is a waste of their money. The articles you write NEED to be unique if you want to sustain your career and gain valuable clients.

2. Keyword Density and Length

When writing SEO content for clients you need to include their chosen keywords. This needs to be done correctly too though if your articles are to be successful. The standard keyword ratio is between 3% and 5% which means for every 100 words you write the keyword should be included at least 3 to 5 times. This is not always possible especially if you have a difficult keyword and in such circumstances you should at least try to include the keyword in your title, first paragraph, and last paragraph. You should also explain this to your client and inform them that if you try to insert the keyword the article will not read correctly. Most clients will be fine with this as many are interested in having valuable content first, and keyword placement second. The lenght of your articles will also be taken into account and a good SEO article will always be between 250 and 500 words with 500 being the more suitable.

3. Quality

When concentrating on SEO articles many clients can often loose sight of the fact that whils these articles may please the search engines, it is in fact humans and not robots that will be reading the content. More and more clients are beginning to realise this which is a blessing for us writers. With the influx of foreign writers who do not have English as a first language and the extremely low rates they have been charging, quality content is again starting to win. If you take a look at the past 2 years, more and more writers from India and such places have come on stream. Webmasters were so focused on SEO that article quality was not so much an issue as price. The result as I’m sure many have seen on various websites have bene articles that were poorly written with very poor english and grammar. Now I’m not saying that all foreign writers are the same, in fact there are many excellent writers who do not have english as their first language, but there are a large number who have also come on stream looking to make a fast buck and have tarnished their reputations with their poor work.

Webmasters who have used these writers are now seeing the results and these keyword stuffed, poorly written articles are backfiring. Website visitor numbers decline, and that of course means that their sales have plumetted too. These webmasters are realising that they really do get what they paid for. This is great news for the professional freelance writers who have been feeling the brunt of these ridiculously low bids. Things are starting to change.

4. Link Worthiness

Another way to make your writing standout and win repeat clients is to ensure that your articles are link worthy. If your articles are strong, people who read them will tell others and link back to them. This is exactly what your clients are looking for as this will bring them more traffic and more sales. Great content is always rewarded by other webmasters and bloggers and if you can write quality content you will reap the benefits too. Links are paramount to webmaster as they increase their search engine ranking and boost their website traffic.

5. Conversion Focused

When writing SEO articles you also need to be aware of the conversion factor. More and more webmasters place conversion events such as newsletter opt-ins on the page that your article will feature. In cases like this they need you article to be informative so that it encourages the reader to subscribe.

6. Addressing The Motives Of The Readers

Readers will always want something, be it information, a solution to a problem, whatever, and as a writer it is your obligation to give it to them in an easy to understand format. If this is not done correctly anyone that reads the article will not be satisfied and leave your clients website. In order to get this aspect of your SEO writing correct you should ask your client what the purpose of his/her article is.

That’s it for this part 2 of SEO conent writing for your clients. The next section will focus on formatting articles and what additional extras you can include to improve the quality of your service and allow you to increase your rates.

Until next time,

Keep writing.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is something that all webmasters want to incorporate into their websites and this includes their content. As a freelance writer is it vital that you understand the logistics of search engine optimization in order to fulfill the needs of your clients and appeal to new clients too.

If you want to be a successful SEO article writer there are four strategies that you need to incorporate. Each of these will be discussed in detail in the next couple of blog posts.

The four strategies are:

1. Keywords
2. Content
3. Formatting
4. Links

Before we move on to discuss the first of these strategies, Keywords, I want to take a moment to explain exactly what an SEO article is.

An SEO article (search engine optimized article) is something that you will be asked to write on a frequent basis. This is basically a piece of writing that will be developed specifically to include targeted keywords. The purpose of these articles is to allow the chosen keywords to rank highly in the search engines. When these articles are written in large batches they can in fact attract large amounts of traffic from the search engines and this is potentially what your cliens will be looking for.

In even simpler terms, an SEO article is an article that is written around a particular keyword in a particular format to attract high results from search engines. Written correctly, SEO optimized articles can get your clients large quantities of visitors and traffic and that is exactly what clients are looking for.

Keywords:

Keywords are paramount when it comes to writing SEO articles. You will more than likely be given the keywords by your client but in order to fully understand the process of SEO optimized articles I think it is only fair that we discuss the process of keyword selection and why these keywords that you have been given are so important.

Keywords are the building blocks of all search engine optimization efforts. The selection of keywords is the first of the four strategies and finding the right keywords is vital. When it comes to keywords for any niche there will be competition and this is something that you client will have looked at before he/she chooses the keywords that they give you. When clients are selecting keywords they are doing so by understanding the motive that is behind the keyword. When they can understand the motives they can select the keyword and know the type of content that will appeal to those who search for this keyword in the search engines.

A couple of examples of this would be:

Keyword: ____ features – the motive associated with a keyword that includes features is that the person seaching will be looking to acquire more information about the particular product. If your client is trying to sell a product this might not necessarily be a good keyword to focus on.

Keyword: Try ____ – the motive associated with a keyword that includes try is a free trail. People will search for this is they want to try out a product or service. If your client doesn’t offer a trial of their product then they should also avoid this keyword.

Keyword: Buy _____ – the motive behind this keyword is of course buy and anyone who searches for this term will be looking to purchase the product or service. If you client is selling a product this is an excellent keyword and it might also be the keyword that has the most competition so your article will need to be top notch in order to be successful. This is why writers who specialize in SEO writing can demand rates up to $100 per article. Their writing gets results and this is exaclty what clients want and they are willing to pay for this expertise.

Your clients will categorize their keywords and may also organize them by geography, by attributes, by intended usages, and by price. This will help them to determine which keywords are more important.

Keyword weight is another important aspect. The weight of a keyword is determined by the number of people who search for that particular keyword each month. If you are serious about SEO writing then this is something that you should be able to check yourself too. There are lots of free keyword tools that will give you these results. If you are given a keyword that is searched over 100,000 times per month then you can be guaranteed that this keyword will have a lot of competition and your article should be written accordingly. In this case it is vital to make your article stand out from the crowd by including as much information as possible.

The majority of the keywords that you will probably receive from your clients will be targeted towards terms that are not highly competitive and as such don’t be surprised if you get keywords that don’t really make sense. You might get a keyword that is difficult to incorporate into sentences and heading and in this case a good trick to use is to try to split the keyword by using a comma,

I have often found that if you take the time to look at your keyword in all aspects you will find a way to incorporate it into your article.

For example:

Learning French Alphabet – this keyword doesn’t make sense and you may be inclined to slot the word the into it but then this changes the keyword.

I have discoverd a great way to use this keyword and that is to finish a sentence with the word learning and being the next one with French Alphabet or break up the sentence with a comma between learning and french.

Example: To help with your learning, french alphabet pronunciation is vital.

As you can see, I have used the exact keyword. It’s easy when you look at things differently.

By using the keyword exactly as your client gives it to you, you will be able to produce the best results. If someone searches for learning french alphabet then your optimized article will show up.

Watch what you type in the search engines and you will get a better idea of what keywords really are. How many times do you leave out the little words such as “the”. You’ll be surprised at what you type into the search engines when you start paying attention.

That’s it for Part 1 of this 4 part article writing report. Tomorrows post will focus on Content so make sure to check back. If you have any questions about Part 1 be sure to ask them in the comments section and I will answer them.

Until next time,

Keep writing.

Today I have something special to share with you. I am constantly getting emails from people who like me are fed up with the state of bidding websites. I’m sure you are familiar with the scenario that seems to be invading the bididng websites – 500 words articles for $1. It’s totally ridiculous and I personally feel like setting up a campaign against this. I mean come on, even beginners should get no less than $2 per 100 words, that’s $10 for a 500 word article. I reckon that if all us ghostwriters and freelancer writers including those just starting out joined together and refused to accept anything less than $2 per 100 words, then these buyers would soon realise that you have to pay to have content written. That’s just my opinion but what do you think?

On to what I was saying before I rambled off topic. I am constantly getting emails from people wondering how to find high paying and even average paying ghostwriting jobs. I respond to each email I get but thought I should share the information with my readers too.

[ad#post-ads]So today I spent some time creating a <a title="Ghostwriting Jobs report" href="http://www.ghostwritinguncovered.com/ghostwritingjobs.pdf" target="_blank">free report for you. This report is only 7 pages long but in it I have put one of the simple methods I use for finding more ghostwriting and freelance writing jobs. I have also included screenshots to show exactly what I am talking about.

This report is my gift to you and a way to help you find more work. I value your readership and if I can help you in anyway you only have to ask. There is an abundance of work for ghostwriters and freelance writers a like and if sharing some of my methods for finding paid writing work with you helps then I am happy to do so.

So please go ahead and download your free gift. If you find it useful pass it on to a friend, stumble or digg this post, or even tell your friends on facebook or twitter. The more we can let others know that there is an alternative to those ridiculous $1 500 word articles the better. I want to see the bidding websites return to what they were back in 2004. When bidding on a job meant getting what you were worth. I never got less than $2 per 100 words even when I was just starting out.

It’s time to take a stand, let all us writers unite, and let people know that our services are worth a lot more than $1.

Until next time,

Keep writing.

P.S. Apologies for my little rant, I just get so frustrated when I hear of people being taken for granted.

About two weeks ago I bought The Ultimate Freelaner which is a new e-book written by Mason Hipp and James Chartrand. The book costs $29 and is available from Freelance Folder.

I just finished reading this e-book and wanted to give my readers my personal opinion.

First Impressions

My first impressions were really good. I really enjoyed reading the first section of this book because it really did tell it like it is. It explained exactly what it is like being a freelancer and how you tend to do everything yourself. I loved the completed honesty of the writing and was fully convinced that I was really going to enjoy this book.

I had really high hopes and was expecting to read a book that would explain where to find those high paying jobs so that I could work less and earn more. I was wrong. This book is not aimed at freelance writers, it is actually aimed at freelancers in general but does reference web designers quite a lot. The book does not tell you where to find high paying jobs and in fact doesn’t even mention them.

This book is basically about expanding and creating a freelance business. It goes into detail about outsourcing, cross sourcing, and partnering, and explains why outsourcing etc, can give you more time to focus on client work.

I have to say I was pretty disappointed when I realised this but I kept reading anyway.

Section two of this book is very interesting and it explains all about creating systems, using software, and automating certain tasks. This is very useful information for any freelancer and I know that I will be implementing a lot of the items discussed in this chapter.

Section three is all about building a freelance team and this section focuses on outsourcing and cross sourcing. I didn’t even know there was a difference here so it goes to show that I have learned something. Again the book is not referencing any particular freelance area and when discussing outsourcing it talks about Virtual Assistants to take care of small tasks that you don’t have automated, and tasks that will free up some of your time. Cross sourcing refers to hiring specialists such as copywriters or coders, people who are skilled and that can take on some of your project work so that you can focus on your area of expertise. Again there is some very valuable information in this section if you are serious about creating a freelance business.

Section four of the book takes about revenue generating assets. Again I have to admit I was very disappointed with the lack of details in this chapter. I was hoping to learn more about advertising on your blog or website, maybe something about the statistics you need to have etc. This chapter basically explained what an asset was and what the benefits of creating one would be. There were a few examples listed with pros and cons, but no step by step, take you by the hand writing that would allow you to go out and earn money immediately after reading. You do get a chapter on how to actually build an asset and there is a list of resources for selling your product but that is really it. No write your e-book, then create your sales page, then hire a marketing professional to market your product, nothing like that.

Section five is all about combining all of the strategies; your systems, assets, and people to build your freelancing business. There is a chapter that tells you when to use systems, when to outsource, and when to do things yourself in this section that is very good. This section also explains how to seperate your tasks into groups which is very useful too.

How Do I Rate The Ultimate Freelancer?

Overall for the information that is contained in this ebook I would have to give it a 4 out of 5. Yes I would have liked a little bit more detail about generating revenue, but heck wouldn’t we all. I found section two extremely useful as is seciton five. Section three discussed outsourcing which is not something that I am personally considering at the moment. I did try this about three years ago with disasterous consequences, although having said that, the information that you get here explains how to do it right.

If you are thinking of expanding your freelance career into a business then I would recommend this e-book as the information contained is not something that I have read elsewhere. This e-book is also valuable to anyone who freelances as there is some information that you won’t be aware of such as systems and task scheduling.

Is The Book Worth It’s Price Of $29

Again this is a personal choice but I think $29 is fairly reasonable. There is an awful lot of information packed into this e-book and I know personally that I will be referring to it quite a lot of the next few weeks as I work on implementing some of the things I have read.

If you have $29, and you are serious about your freelance career then this e-book will definitely serve as an investment. Even though all aspects of the book aren’t to my liking, the aspects that I found interesting are invaluable.

Welcome to another Friday of love here at The Hidden Writer. It’s been another crazy busy week for me, i just don’t know what’s happening. Clients are literally crawling out of the wood work and new clients are continuing to pour in. I am putting it down to the new website design and of course the fact that my rates are now clearly visible. (I will discuss my decision on this in another post).

In between writing, editing, and researching this week, I have still managed to pull up some excellent posts to list for you here today. First though, I want to say a big thank you to everyone who comments on these blog posts. They are written for you and when you comment it let me know that you appreciate what I am dong here. Without further ado, here’s today’s list of posts.

This post is bound to stir up some contraversy but it is something that I have been thinking about since doing my first coaching session with a friend of mine last week. I was explaining to her how to use Elance and how to word her bids so that she might stand a chance of winning the job she was after.

So anyway after logging into Elance and getting her to pick a job that she would like to bid on, I set to work showing her how to word her proposal and showcase her talents. The next part was putting a cost on the project. I found myself explaining to her that she would have to bid low in order to get her first job and feedback rating. It was a transcription job and she like myself would have around 10 years experience doing this type of work. We set a bid price of $75 for typing up 7 seminars with a completion date of three working days. Now I know what everyone is thinking….OMG $75 how could you?

Long story short, she got the bid and was absolutely over the moon. She couldn’t believe it, she was a little child who had just been given the best present ever. It got me thinking about when I first started ghostwriting. I remembered that feeling, the excitement over winning a bid, the sheer joy at actually getting paid to do what I love. When I think about it now I realise how much things have changed in those few short years. Now when I think of Elance I just don’t bother. Why would I work for so little, why would I waste my time, so many why’s. The reality of it is though, I have become greedy. I’ve read so many posts where people are giving out about low pay, people are complaining constantly about Elance, and people saying that no writer should work for such low pay. There are writers constantly telling you that you should be getting x, y, and z for your writing and like most others out there I listened.

I stopped bidding on Elance, I stopped feeling that excitement that I felt when I won a bid, and I stopped enjoying getting paid for my writing. Now it was all about how much I could get, how much money could I make, it wasn’t about the writing anymore, it was now all about the money.

Watching the excitement on my friend’s face when she won that bid made me realise that I missed that excitement. I missed the thrill of winning and most of all I missed the feeling of getting paid to do what I loved. Have you lost that excitement? Do you think that you have become greedy over the years?

Yes I have my high paying clients and yes I make a large sum of money each month, but the excitement just isn’t there anymore. I remember I worked long hours but I also enjoyed every minute of it too. I loved learning about new things and now my writing has become a mere job, a greedy job too where everything is focused on money.

I have decided to change that. I want the passion and excitement back, I want the sheer thrill of the chase, that feeling that I have beaten everyone else and won the prize. Don’t you want that too? Don’t you want to feel as excited as you first did when you started writing for money?

How do I intend to do this? I’m going to start bidding on jobs again. I’m going to start going to Elance and seeing what’s on offer. I’m going to look for ghostwriting jobs that will spark my passion again and I am going to bid. I know that I will have to lower my rates to do this but I don’t mind. I believe that finding my writing passion and being grateful for the opportunity to get paid is more than enough.

It’s time to stop being greedy and focus more on how my writing skills can help others. We keep reading about a recession so maybe it’s time to start giving back. I know that most people reading this won’t agree with me and that’s fine, but let me ask you one question. If getting paid $2 per 100 words meant that you would again feel the excitement that you felt the first time you started getting paid for your writing, would you take it?

Until next time,

Keep writing.

Welcome to the very first Friday link love of 2009. I have quite a lot to share with you today so here goes.

First up is a post called The 10 Free Resources Every Writer Needs. Some excellent stuff here and definitely worth the read.

Over on Mashable they have a great post title <a href="http://mashable.com/2008/12/16/find-jobs/" target="_blank">100+ places to find jobs. Some great gems here and some websites I hadn’t heard about before. I’ve bookmarked quite a few.

Next a website I found while stumbling called Learn Gsm with a great post on 50 Useful Google Apps For Writers.

The next website link is not so much a blog post but I’m including it anyway. Bright Hub are looking for writers to submit content and be paid for it. Sounds promising so be sure to check this one out.

Web Writer News has a post about getting paid to write and earning residual income.

<a href="http://www.aboutfreelancewriting.com/2009/01/goal-setting-and-keeping-freelance-writing-resource-roundup-tuesday/" target="_blank">About freelance Writing has a great post on Goal Setting and Keeping which is perfect for the start of a new year. Some great tips in this article. This website also has another excellent post titled “Are you in love with your Writing?” This is definite must read for everyone.

The Golden Pencil have a very good article this week on Deadly Freelance Assumptions (or how to go out of business) Some excellent freelance myths debunked in this article and a must read for all freelancers.

Author Marketing Experts have a great post on Trend Spotting and Predictions for 2009. This article gives writers an insight into what to be writing about in 2009. Very good article and a definite for bookmarking so that you can refer back to it often.

Nick Daws Writing Blog is next with a post titled Seven Reasons to be Cheerful in 2009. In this article Nick explains why the economic turndown might just be a really good thing for us writers. Thanks Nick very inspiring.

Last but not least I have something for all the writers out there that like to write poetry. Writing Roads are creating The Love E-book. This project is for charity which in itself is always a good cause and they are looking for submissions for their ebook. Deadline for submission is 31st January so why not take a look at what they are planning and see if you can’t help out.

That’s it for this Friday but I’m sure you will agree there is plenty here to keep you reading for quite some time. So make yourself a cup of coffee or tea and get comfortable. Just be sure to leave your comments and let me know what link you found most useful this week.

Until next time,

Keep writing.

It’s Friday again and time to list some of the great posts that I read over the past week. There is some really great information on the internet and sometimes finding it can be difficult. I tend to find a lot of these posts through Twitter and by using Stumble. I hope you enjoy reading these posts and remember if you would like to have a link to something interested that you have written why not contact me.

The first post for today is from The freelance Writing Business Blog and is titled <a href="http://writinghightech.typepad.com/freelance_business/2008/11/self-discipline-and-freelance-writing.html" target="_blank">Self Discipline And Freelance Writing. This is a very interesting read and provides some great tips on how to make yourself more productive.

Next is a post from Get Paid To Write Online titled What To Do When You Have Said It All. This post discusses what to do when you run out of things to say when working on a project.

Next is a post from The Jen Hamilton Blog which is a new blog I have discovered. The post is titled Freelance Writing: Defining the Process for a new Client Steps 4 and 5. You can also read the 3 other steps on her blog too. This is a great blog, can’t believe I haven’t seen it before. This post which is part 4 and 5 of a series of posts is all about explaining the project process to your client so that they fully understand exactly what you are doing.

Next is another new blog discover for me and the post is titled Branding Tips For Freelance Writers and the blog is called Freedom Freelance. This article is all about branding yourself and your name as a freelance writer.

Web Worker Daily has a great post about Maintaining Your Flexibility As A Freelancer.

My last post for today is from John Chow Dot Com titled How To Bring Interactivity to Your Blog. This blog is not a freelance writing blog but the post relates to any blog for any purpose or niche. A very interesting read that can provide a lot of excellent tips.

That’s it for this Friday but be sure to get your posts listed in the comments section if you want them to appear in next Friday’s listing.

Do you have a favourite blog that you visit when you need information?

Until next time,

Keep writing.
